Kellogg's Is Very Sorry About This Racist Corn Pop Drawing

The above illustration depicts a corn pop mall, which appeared on Kellogg’s boxes to sell corn pops to children. You may notice that there’s only one brown corn pop at the corn pop mall, and it’s the janitor.

Writer Saladin Ahmed noticed the little figure scrubbing away with its earbuds in and tweeted at the company, who quickly responded.

Though Ahmed’s mentions are probably a hellscape right now, he thanked Kellogg’s and celebrated the little victories:

Kellogg’s spokesperson Kris Charles told USA Today in a statement that “Kellogg respects all people and is committed to diversity,” confirming that the packaging has been changed.

“We take feedback very seriously, and it was never our intention to offend anyone,” he said in a statement. “We apologize sincerely.”

If you read a headline about a brown corn pop being a racist caricature in 2017, you might think it’s another case of Internet culture making us all too sensitive. But you’re wrong, because this corn pop drawing is hella racist. Whoever drew it went out of their way to make it clear that this darker pop was separate and excluded from the fun, and also working their ass off. I’m not saying we need corn pop diversity. Corn pops aren’t people! But if you’re going to the trouble of making one brown, let it party with the other corn pops, for god’s sake.
