Charles Goldie drawing of Sophia Hinerangi fetches more than $118k

A pencil drawing by renowned New Zealand artist Charles Goldie has fetched the highest price ever paid for one of his drawings.

The drawing, Sophia, of Maori guide Sophia Hinerangi, was expected to sell for up to $40,000 but went for $118,975 at an auction tonight.

Parnell's International Art Centre director Richard Thomson said the drawing, completed in 1931, had been owned by the Goldie family and had never before been shown in public.

"It had great provenance and there was huge interest in this drawing. The final bid was well above anything ever paid for a Goldie drawing.

"Like his oil paintings, in this pencil drawing Goldie has achieved something quite captivating about Sophia who was a friend and favoured subject," Thomson said.

Two photographs of Goldie in his Auckland studio also sold for well above the expected price. One fetched $13,000 and the other $7100.

Two certificates of merit awarded to Goldie when he was 13 and 14 sold for $1780, well above the predicted $500, and photographs of six Goldie paintings sold for $5700, well above the expected price of $1500.
