John Byrne, one of Scotland’s most popular painters, will attempt to revive the lost art of drawing during the Royal Scottish Academy’s largest exhibition, Ages of Wonder.
Byrne is one of four artists who will take part in a weekly life school, one of the events taking place during the show’s
two-month run in Edinburgh. The classes were important, said Byrne, because “proper drawing has gone” from an art world increasingly dominated by conceptual work.
It was a tragedy because drawing “is the basis of your practice”, he said, and many of the most exciting job opportunities for young artists were in animation.
