Every Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert is notable, but this year's event will stand out in several ways.
First off, it will be conducted by music director Franz Welser-Most. In celebration of the orchestra's centennial and in recognition of King as an exemplar of the virtues hailed by the orchestra's ongoing "Prometheus Project," Welser-Most will lead a program of traditional hymns and spirituals as well as related works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Verdi.
In this, he and the orchestra will be joined by narrator James Pickens Jr., bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green, conductor William Henry Caldwell, and the Martin Lutheran King Jr. Celebration Chorus, a group composed of singers from local church choirs.
Public radio and television also will play an expanded role. In addition to its annual live radio broadcast on WCPN FM/90. 3 and WCLV FM/104.9, WVIZ Channel 25 will also broadcast the concert on television, at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26. The program also will be offered to other stations, for possible broadcast around Ohio.
A note about parking. Parking in the underground garage adjacent to Severance Hall will be available for free on Jan. 14, on a first-come, first-served basis. The performance begins at 7 p.m. On Monday, Jan. 15, during the orchestra's annual Community Open House, the parking rate will be $7.
