(Dec. 26, 2017) The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of its 33rd annual Christmas Eve Red Ticket Drawing, which has served to boost the island economy by encouraging residents to "shop local" since its inception in 1984. More than half a million tickets were distributed by 64 participating Chamber member businesses, representing between $10 million and $11 million in local revenue. There were five winners of $1,000 each, and one $5,000 winner, for a total of $10,000 in cash prizes.
Todd Burns won the $5,000 prize, with a ticket received at Marine Home Center. The $1,000 winners were Georgina Winton, who received her ticket at Don Allen Auto Service, Adam Hofford (Marine Home Center), Steve Roethke (Marine Home Center), Duncan MacAllister (Nantucket Energy) and the Nantucket Inn (Island Carpet). Red tickets were distributed at participating local businesses for every $25 spent between Nov. 1 and noon, Dec. 24. At this year's drawing, new Chamber executive director David Martin welcomed attendees and Eric Goddard, Nantucket's town crier, served as emcee. Amelia Murphy, Nantucket's Distinguished Young Woman, pulled the winning tickets. The Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, an independent, member-driven organization, is comprised of nearly 700 businesses. Founded in 1934, it is the primary organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the Nantucket business community, and continues to drive programs such as the Red Ticket Drawing, as well as shoulder season and member networking events, workshops and think tanks. For up-to-the-minute information on Nantucket’s breaking news, boat and plane cancellations, weather alerts, sports and entertainment news, deals and promotions at island businesses and more, Sign up for Inquirer and Mirror text alerts.
