ASHLAND – Two sisters earned top honors in The Ashland Gazette’s 2017 Holiday Drawing Contest.
Ann and Ellie McKnight both were judged to have created the best drawings for their respective age groups by a member of the Ashland Arts Council. They are the daughters of Robert and Kassie McKnight of Ashland.
Ann’s colorful drawing of Christmas presents accented by the words “Merry Christmas!” won the older kids division (ages 8 and up).
Her younger sister, Ellie, drew a Santa getting ready to deliver Christmas presents under a bright orange moon to win first place for youth up to age 7.
Ann loves to draw. Every day she can be found with fresh new piece paper in front of her, creating a masterpiece.
“I like drawing because I can draw whatever I want,” she said.
She prefers drawing people and figures, large and small. But her favorite things to draw are doodles.
“I love to doodle,” the 10-year-old said with a smile. “I even doodle on my tests.”
Ann also loves Christmas.
“I love being with family and getting to celebrate Jesus’ birthday,” she said.
Seven-year-old Ellie also loves to draw.
“I like to draw faces,” she said.
Animals are also on her to-do list.
“Puppies, and I’m good at cats,” she said.
Christmas memories for Ellie also include family.
“My favorite part about Christmas is being with family and friends and being able to open presents,” she said.
This year, she is hoping a new pack of markers is among her Christmas presents.
Breleigh Mech of South Bend earned second place in the older kids division for her detailed drawing of a Christmas scene colored brightly with markers.
The nine-year-old said the drawing shows her sleeping in a chair next to a table with milk and cookies waiting for Santa. Santa is coming down the chimney, which is next to the Christmas tree and presents. A snowman stands outside of the house, and Santa’s sleigh and reindeer are up on the roof. Intricate snowflakes complete the drawing.
Art is a way of life for the daughter of Toby and Cassondra Barnt.
“I like putting things together to see how it turns out,” Breleigh said.
Breleigh likes to create art for others.
“She makes birthday cards for everybody,” said her mother.
These cards can include scenes that pop up when opened, or may be adorned with beads and other sparkly accessories.
“Whatever she can find around the house,” mom said.
Breleigh even gets creative with her Christmas list. One year, she created a book for Santa that listed what she and her little sister wanted for presents.
Lizzi Poell’s artistic talent earned her second place in the younger kids category for her colored pen drawing of a family at Christmas time. The mom, dad, two girls and a baby are holding hands as they stand next to two Christmas trees. Santa’s sleigh is flying overhead.
“It’s a family outside waiting for presents,” Lizzi said.
The daughter of Jeremy and Megan Poell of Ashland loves to draw at the desk in her room. She also keeps colors in the kitchen, where she can also be found creating new works of art, said her dad.
Lizzi’s favorite part about Christmas is that everyone is “nice to each other.” She hopes Santa will bring her a Hatchimal when he visits her house on Christmas Eve.
This year, the Holiday Drawing Contest was co-sponsored by the Ashland Arts Council. The first place winners won a pizza meal deal donated by Breadeaux Pizza in Ashland. Second prize winners received $25 in Chamber Bucks, donated by The Ashland Gazette.
