A Dale City man won $1 million in the big Mega Millions drawing Jan. 5.
Marcus Cobb told lottery officials that he didn’t bother to check his numbers right after the drawing because he had heard the winning ticket for the $450 million jackpot was purchased in Florida, according to a Virginia Lottery news release.
When he got around to checking the numbers, he discovered that he had matched the first five numbers, earning the million-dollar consolation prize. The odds of matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in 18,492,204.
“I looked at my ticket and I was stunned!” he said as he claimed his prize. “I looked at the ticket again and again, and then I started yelling to wake everyone up!”
He was so excited, his wife, Demetria Cobb, said she was afraid he’d have a heart attack.
The ticket was purchased at Shell/E & C, 14352 Gideon Drive in Woodbridge, and the store received a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.
The Cobbs say they intend to save for their children’s college educations.
