NY Senate's revised sexual harassment policy drawing fire

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) The only female leader of a legislative conference in Albany is taking issue with the state Senate's newly revised anti-sexual harassment policy because it includes a warning to false accusers.

The Republican-controlled chamber distributed the policy Monday to senators and staff. The four-page document includes the new sentence, "Reporting a false complaint is a serious act."

Andrea Stewart-Cousins, leader of the chamber's Democratic conference, says emphasizing false reporting is an example of "the type of intimidation" that has kept harassment victims from coming forward.

She says she wasn't included in discussions about the revised policy.

The revision, first reported Tuesday by The New York Times, updates a 2007 policy. It comes amid sexual harassment allegations leveled at the leader of the chamber's breakaway Democratic faction by a former Senate staffer.
