May 04, 2018 — Traditional Arts in Upstate New York opens an exhibit Saturday that features the work of St. Lawrence County artist Bill Newman, who lives on his family dairy farm outside of Rensselaer Falls. He's lived his entire life on the farm, and most of his vibrant, pastel landscapes and still life drawings are scenes from the farm. TAUNY is hosting an opening reception for Newman tomorrow afternoon and his art will be on display through June 28.
His artistic secondary career has been designing and painting theater sets for local high school, college and community theater productions. His stage work includes a knack for creating realistic, 3-D bookcases and furniture.
But his real love is drawing and painting the ordinary - a package of cookies on a kitchen counter, or a patch of rhubarb in the backyard. Newman says, "The messy, distracting details that other artists leave out" are what he loves creating. He told Todd Moe that a single pen-and-ink still life of his bedroom nightstand convinced him that he could be an artist.
But - as he tells in the story below - maybe not a coutroom sketch artist.
