Notre Dame drawing interest from 2020 DL recruits

Top 50 weak-side defensive end prospect Mekhail Sherman likes what he’s heard about the Irish from former teammates Kofi Warldow and D.J. Brown.

That St. John’s College connection could go a long way for the Irish, who offered the 6-foot-4, 235-pound 2020 prospect on May 25.

“I can’t emphasize enough, it’s a really big change in my recruitment,” Sherman told Irish Illustrated last week. “The plan is that they’re a contender right now.”

In reviewing Sherman’s sophomore film, you’ll see why Elston is recruiting the No. 26 overall 2020 prospect in the nation at the drop end position.

Listed as an outside linebacker, Sherman often lines up on the line of scrimmage on both the strong and weak-side edge in a two-point stance. He shows that he can engage and shed blocks efficiently, and flashes elite athleticism in how he closes on the ball carrier.

He also drops into the flats from his position on the edge and will cover downfield from the linebacker position in St. John’s nickel defense, proving his worth in coverage.

These responsibilities are performed admirably versus the top competition in the Washington, D.C. area. Of course, this is an athlete with two years of prep development remaining.

Expect Sherman to visit Notre Dame. Whether the Irish will remain in the mix through to the end will be interesting to see. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and many others have also offered.

So far, the Irish appear to be getting a fair shake.

Sophomore stats: 51 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, seven sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble, one interception.
