What is a drawing of lots, how could it be used to separate England and Belgium and has the system been used at a ...

ENGLAND'S win over Panama secured a place in the knockout rounds - but it could come down to pure luck for top spot.

With Belgium level on points, goal difference and goals scored in Group G, they may have to draw lots to decide who will go through as winners.

What has to happen for teams to draw lots?

For England, they are currently level on six points with Belgium going into the last match as well as having the same goal difference.

When these cannot permutations separate sides, it goes down to goals scored before points gained and goal difference between the teams that are tied.

Should they also fail to produce an outright winner, disciplinary records are called into question, before lots are drawn by the FIFA Organising Committee to eventually decide who finishes higher.

England currently have two yellow cards while Belgium have three, meaning lots will be drawn in the event of a tie which sees the Three Lions pick up.

  • Tiebreakers between teams at the World Cup are based on the following:
  • Goal difference in games between the tied teams
  • Goals scored in games between the teams
  • Disciplinary points (one point for a yellow card, three of two yellow cards resulting in a red card, four for a straight red card, five for a straight red card given to a player who has a yellow card)
  • If all of these are the same then it's the drawing of lots by the Fifa organising committee

When could the draw take place?

Should the tiebreaker go down to drawing lots - the draw will take at 9pm BST (11pm local time) in the press conference room at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Has it ever happened before?

Yes it has. Only once when Republic of Ireland and Holland could not be separated at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Both teams had already earned a place in the knockout stages in Group F, but they need to decide who would go through in second and third.

Fortunately for Ireland, they 'won' on the lots, meaning they would finish runners-up to England and secure them a more favourable draw in the next round.

They went onto beat Romania to reach the quarter-finals, while Holland were defeated by eventual winners West Germany in the Last 16.
