Third quarter, 10:35, Chargers 23-17: Momentum is completely on the Chargers’ side, as they shred the 49ers’ defense on a 24-yard Tyrell Williams catch and a 13-yard Melvin Gordon run to crack the red zone.
Gordon finishes the job with a 6-yard touchdown catch on a third-down pass, but Caleb Sturgis amazingly misses another point-after attempt.
The 49ers need an answer. Fast.
At least there’s this good news …
Mike McGlinchey will return to the game when the 49ers take over.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
Third quarter, 13:23, Tied 17-17: Well, that wasn’t a great start for the 49ers. Three-and-out, and the Chargers return the punt to midfield.
To make matters worse, the 49ers have lost two key players, and another is questionable.
#49ers: WR Dante Pettis and LT Joe Staley are both ruled OUT for the remainder of the game with knee injuries.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
Mike McGlinchey (knee) is questionable.

Halftime, Tied 17-17: Caleb Sturgis, who’s had a rough day with two missed kicks, drills a 48-yard field goal, and the Chargers have erased their deficit.
Niners quarterback C.J. Beathard has been efficient, completing 14 of 21 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown -- although he nearly fumbled away the ball deep in his own territory on a botched hand-off to Matt Brieda.
San Francisco’s run game is almost non-existent, with just 30 yards on 11 carries.
The 49ers will receive the second-half kickoff.
Second quarter, 0:13, 49ers 17-14: The 49ers can’t get anything going on their last drive of the half, so they punt -- and the Chargers nearly score. Desmond King takes the kick all the way to the 49ers’ 32, where punter Bradley Pinion makes a touchdown-saving tackle.
Uh oh.
Second quarter, 0:48, 49ers 17-14: The Chargers’ offense definitely wasn’t rusty after being without the ball for almost 11 minutes. L.A. goes 80 yards and scores on Philip Rivers’ 22-yard touchdown pass to Austin Ekeler down the right sideline.
Rivers' two-point conversion pass to Melvin Gordon also is good, and it’s a three-point game.
Fred Warner was isolated up top against Austin Ekeler and Philip Rivers found him for 22-yard TD. After two-point conversion, the Chargers trail 17-14 with :47 remaining in first half.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
Second quarter, 4:59, 49ers 17-6: The 49ers convert third down after third down on a 20-play (!) drive, but it stops at the Chargers’ 3, and Robbie Gould kicks a 21-yard field goal. Really needed a touchdown after having the ball for 10 minutes and 44 seconds.
Our Matt Maiocco also has an update on 49ers rookie Dante Pettis, for those of you wondering …
Dante Pettis, who was listed as questionable with a knee injury, is sitting on the bench looking a lot more “doubtful" or "out."
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
Left tackle Joe Staley is hurting, too.
Staley is going into the blue medical tent for further observation.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
#49ers injury report: LT Joe Staley (knee) is questionable to return.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
First quarter, 0:43, 49ers 14-6: The Chargers went to Antonio Gates three times in the red zone, and it paid off the third time, as Philip Rivers hit his ageless tight end for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Blown coverage all the way on Ahkello Witherspoon’s side. Antonio Gates was left wide open for the easiest TD of his career.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
More trouble for kicker Caleb Strugis, though, as he shanks the point-after attempt.
Also, L.A. has an injury concern ...
WR Travis Benjamin (foot) questionable to return. #SFvsLAC
— Los Angeles Chargers (@Chargers) September 30, 2018
First quarter, 3:53, 49ers 14-0: A 17-yard pass to Marquise Goodwin, combined with a roughing-the-pass call on the Chargers, puts the 49ers in the end zone, and they don’t miss.
C.J. Beathard puts a slant pass right on Kendrick Bourne for a 2-yard touchdown, and it’s all San Francisco right now.
That's CJ to KB for the score. #49ers scoring drive: 6 plays, 56 yards in 3:08. 14-0 #SFvsLAC pic.twitter.com/LshUbwlM4g

C.J. Beathard is 4 of 5 for 33 yards with one TD, no interceptions and a passer rating of 133.8.#49ers 14#Chargers 0

Vegas likely isn't liking that too much ...
The #49ers, who were 10 1/2-point underdogs, lead 14-0 with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
First quarter, 7:01, 49ers 7-0: Caleb Sturgis’ 54-yard field-goal attempt sails wide right, and the Chargers fail to score after a fourth-down gamble puts them in range.
It came after a huge tackle by 49ers rookie linebacker Fred Warner, who got just enough of Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen on a third-and-5 pass to force fourth-and-1 at the L.A. 46. But Philip Rivers converted on a QB sneak, and the Chargers drove down the field.
Also, we have an update on injured 49ers rookie Dante Pettis …
#49ers injury report: WR Dante Pettis (knee) is questionable to return to the game.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
First quarter, 11:32, 49ers 7-0: C.J. Beathard’s first drive as the 49ers’ starting QB this season doesn’t go as he hoped. He goes three-and-out, as he misfires to a wide-open Pierre Garcon on one play, and the 49ers commit a false-start penalty on another.
After a 49ers punt, it's Chargers ball at their own 37.
First quarter, 12:57, 49ers 7-0: As if the 49ers needed any more bad injury news, but rookie Dante Pettis is injured on a punt return -- the Chargers went three-and-out -- and it doesn’t look good.
Pettis is up, but requiring some assistance to go to the 49ers’ sideline.
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) September 30, 2018
First quarter, 14:03, 49ers 7-0: Talk about a challenge answered.
Antone Exum picks off an errant Philip Rivers pass and takes it 32 yards for a 49ers touchdown. Wow.
First INT of the year for the #49ers and it's a big one!

11:55 a.m.: The 49ers have some good news -- Antone Exum, who was added to the injury report Saturday, is active for the game. He'll likely start at safety in place of Jaquiski Tartt, who was held out because of a shoulder injury.
Running backs Matt Brieda and Alfred Morris, both of whom were expected to play despite being listed as questionable on the injury report, also are active for the 49ers.
