Did you know there's a drawing for a pretty large Powerball jackpot on Wednesday? Until now, the Powerball has been overshadowed by the frenzy over the enormous Mega Millions jackpot of more than $1.5 billion.
Now that someone in South Carolina is trying to figure out what to do with all that Mega Millions money, that $620 million Powerball jackpot isn't looking so bad. (The lump sum value is $354.3 million.)
The Powerball drawing is set for 10:59 p.m. Wednesday.
The last Powerball winner was in New York on Aug. 11, according to the lottery website, with 20 straight drawings without a winner.
The more people who play, the better the odds that someone will win. Each ticket's odds stay the same, however: 1 in 292,201,338. By comparison, your odds of getting attacked by a shark are much better: 1 in 11,500,000.
At the last drawing, seven tickets matched all five white balls to win $1 million. Two more included the Power Play to win $2 million. The tickets were sold in Arizona, Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Washington, Florida and Tennessee.
Saturday's winning numbers were 16-54-57-62-69, Power Ball 23, Power Play 2X.
How to play Powerball:
Powerball tickets also cost $2 each. Players try to match five numbers (the white balls) from 1 to 69 for a $1 million prize. If they also match the Power Play number, that's worth $2 million. Players also pick a number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball number. If they match all five plus the Powerball, they win the jackpot.
Prizes start at $4 for matching just the Powerball and go up from there with more matches. A Power Play match increases each prize.
Four white balls plus the Powerball, for example, will win $50,000, with that increasing to up to $500,000 with a 10X Power Play match.
Powerball drawing times are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m.
The cutoff time for buying tickets is 1-2 hours before the drawings, depending on location.
