Professional Artist Elida Field stopped by to show us how to draw a spooky spider – a fun addition to our Halloween décor.
Spooky Spiders
October maybe my favorite month! Not only is it my birthday month (whoop whoop) it’s also a month where you really feel like Fall has arrived. Along with the change in weather, you’ll also see more spiderwebs and spiders hanging around. Creating these bigger then life charcoal spiders are sure to get a scream! Even if you don’t like the “real” spiders hanging out, you might not mind having these drawings hanging on your wall. They are so cool and look like they could walk right off of the page! Yikes!
Materials

Drawing a charcoal spider (black widow):
~Look up some images of the type of spider you’d like to draw, or take some photos of your fuzzy friends hanging around your house.
~Start by sketching a small egg shaped circle, the size of a dime or slightly larger, just above middle of the paper. Next, add the two antenna on the top of the head. Then make a larger circle for the mid-section and finally a much bigger circle, more in the shape of an egg for the main part of the body.
~Sketch four small circles from just below the head to the top of the bottom half of the spider and they repeat on the other side so that you have 8 total.
~Then draw in the legs, starting from the top two legs and working your way down. The last set of legs at the bottom will be the longest. Each leg will have tiny fur on them towards the end.
~Sketch out the hour glass on the bottom section of the body if you are doing a black widow.
~Begin to shade in the body and legs with the black charcoal, but leave some areas open or where you can see the paper shinning through.
~ Then just below each leg and the body, use your finger to shade below each one.
~You can use white chalk to add some highlights as well as use an eraser to clean up any unwanted smudges.
~Finally, use some red, pink or orange pastel to fill in the hour glass on the back of the black widow. If you want to seal the chalk and keep it from smearing, you can spray the finished piece with fixative.
~Have fun displaying such spooky and GIANT spiders!
