Henrico man takes home $1 million after Mega Millions drawing

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Charles Payne, a Henrico local, stopped for gas at the Gum Spring BP and decided to pick up a Mega Millions ticket. The jackpot for the winning ticket was estimated at $1 billion.

Payne's girlfriend had to tell him he won. "I think you won a pile of money," she said. Payne missed only the Mega Ball number.

His winning ticket, which Payne allowed the computer to select, had the first five winning numbers.

On Nov. 1, Payne went back to the same BP store, not for a lottery ticket but for his big check from the Virginia Lottery.

The BP store also received a prize: $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Payne's $1 million winning ticket was just one of two in the Commonwealth to win during the Oct. 19 drawing, according to Virginia Lottery News.
