Damyean Dotson has sat on the outside, looking in, as the New York Knicks have changed their rotation a handful of times. Now, teams have inquired on the second-year man.
Highlighted by playing time inconsistency, Damyean Dotson’s tenure with the New York Knicks has never felt steady. He only found sporadic impact when Jeff Hornacek was the head coach in 2017-18, and, while David Fizdale granted the second-year man a run in the starting lineup, it was eventually yanked, along with his playing time.
Dotson has not played since Nov. 18, despite making nine starts and scoring double-double points 10 times. Mario Hezonja assumed his spot, starting four games and counting.
However, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post, Dotson has drawn trade interest. Not because he’s a little-used player that can potentially be had for a minimal price, but his unguaranteed contract for 2019-20.
It’s a low-cost rental for prospective teams. If Dotson flourishes, he sticks around on $1.6 million for 2019-20 — cheap for a role player, even if the modern-day NBA. If not, they can waive the Houston product before July 15, 2019.
Dotson was a product of the Phil Jackson regime. Weeks before the former president of basketball operations departed, he selected Dotson in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft.
Per Berman, while Steve Mills — now the team’s president — was part of that front office group that summer, Jackson and Clarence Gaines “spearheaded” selecting Dotson.
Basically, it seems Dotson is not this regime’s “guy,” so it could place him on the chopping block. This happens when new executives assume control over incumbent players in any sport, especially the NFL to find proper player personnel for the front office’s liking.
If the Knicks try to move Dotson, does he have value? It’s similar to Willy Hernangomez, another former second-round pick of Jackson’s. He was traded in February 2018, after failing to find consistent playing time, to the Charlotte Hornets for Johnny O’Bryant and two second-round picks.
To improve a possible trade package, Fizdale would need to play Dotson. That’s complicated, though, with Courtney Lee’s impending return to further clog the rotation.
So, while the report never indicated the New York Knicks’ willingness to deal Dotson, enough outside interest may change that.
