It’s been over a month since Yankees general manager Brian Cashman publicly announced Sonny Gray was on the market, the right-hander will be headed out of The Bronx — and perhaps soon.
The Yankees have talked to the Reds about Gray, who just turned 29, The Post confirmed. And his former team, the Athletics, are also reportedly interested in a possible reunion, according to MLB.com.
Both potential landing spots would make sense for Gray.
The Reds’ new pitching coach, Derek Johnson, was Gray’s pitching coach at Vanderbilt and Cincinnati president of baseball operations Dick Williams told WLW this week, “I think we need to add two pitchers. … There’s a good chance we’ll target two starters.”
Cashman has repeated his intent to trade Gray throughout the offseason, saying, “It just hasn’t worked out here.”
He added on Thursday that he’s been “very active talking to other clubs … There are a lot of players available on the trade market.”
Cashman expects to import two starting pitchers, either through trades or free agency, saying he has “a lot of heavy lifting to do this winter.”
So far, that only has included bringing back CC Sabathia and Brett Gardner on one-year deals.
The real heavy lifting could begin with Gray, who came to the Yankees from Oakland prior to the trade deadline in 2017 and struggled throughout his tenure in The Bronx — especially at Yankee Stadium.
In 15 games (11 starts) at home last season, Gray finished with a 6.98 ERA, compared to a 3.17 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) on the road. That disparity gives other teams hope that he’ll return to the form he showed in Oakland in a different setting.
