Despite the fact that there was no scream of celebration around Trigoria, as was inaccurately reported by Sky Sport’s Tancredi Palmeri; the front office and manager seemed content with Monday’s Champions League draw. The team’s official Twitter account, witty as always, was quick to shut down Palmeri. No need to add fuel to Porto’s fire, I guess.
After the draw in Nyon, Francesco Totti admitted that Roma were a bit fortunate not to draw some of the biggest sides in Europe.
“Perhaps we can say we are a bit fortunate, looking at some of the other sides we could have faced,” Totti said.
However, he was sure to add in that Porto are a formidable opponent and that Roma would have to be at their best to emerge victorious.
Totti continued on by setting lofty goals for Roma even if they will likely be difficult to attain.
“We want to repeat what we did last season in the Champions League, even though obviously we know that will be far from easy. We haven’t been great in the league so far this season, but we still have a chance to rebound and do much, much better than we have been doing.”
The rest of Totti’s interview can be found on the AS Roma official site. In the rest of the interview he touched on Porto Coach Sergio Conceicao, a former Lazio player, and his adjustment to life in a director’s role.
Meanwhile, EdF kept his comments on the draw rather terse, speaking on the excitement of returning to the knockout stages of the competition. The Roma manager highlighted Porto’s success so far this season and admitted that Roma historically haven’t fared well against the Portuguese side.
Roma CEO Mauro Baldissoni also spoke on the draw stating his pleasure on drawing Porto. However, he was also cautious in his comments pointing out Porto’s strong record thus far.
“Each of us would perhaps have chosen Porto, but it would be foolish not to be worried about this team when you see their points record in the group. We have to return to being Roma and face this tie with the serenity of a challenge we’re happy to be facing.”
In the full interview, which can be seen here in English courtesy of Football Italia, spoke on Roma’s struggles this season. Additionally, he spoke on the hot topic of Di Francesco.
