LINCOLN, Neb. — Stanford's athletic director has apologized after a picture from Stanford volleyball's locker room circulated on social media following Saturday's national championship match and created some outrage.
The picture, which was tweeted out after Stanford won the women's volleyball national championship over Nebraska Saturday night, appeared to show a drawing of Stanford's mascot with a gun pointed at Herbie Husker on a white board in the locker room. The tweet has since been deleted.
On Sunday morning, Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir issued an apology saying, "We are aware of a picture taken in our team’s locker room following the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championship and posted on social media. The image is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of Stanford University. We have reached out to our colleagues at Nebraska to express our sincerest apologies to the university and its women’s volleyball program. We regret detracting from what was otherwise a great night for the sport of women’s volleyball."
Stanford beat Nebraska in five sets on Saturday to win the national championship.
