If a new report is to be believed, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly is drawing renewed NFL interest as the league’s coaching carousel warms up.

According to 670 The Score’s David Haugh, Kelly has emerged as a coach of interest in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers search for a new head coach after the organization fired Dirk Koetter on Monday following a 5-11 season. After hiring search fire Korn-Ferry to help find a new head coach, sources tell 670 The Score that Kelly’s name has surfaced in the last 48 hours as the search heats up.

This isn’t the first time Kelly has been tied to the NFL. Following his third season at Notre Dame when he led the Irish to the 2013 NCA National Championship, Kelly interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles in January 2013 and was said to also be drawing interest from other NFL teams. Kelly ultimately remained in South Bend and led a resurgence in 2018 with a 12-0 regular season.

Per the latest report, Kelly remains intrigued by coaching the NFL but it isn’t immediately clear if he is interested in the Buccaneers job or the timing.

“The Glazers are known for aiming high for coaching candidates and are said to be considering paying their next coach as much as $10 million per season, a salary hard for Kelly to ignore," Haugh wrote. “That compensation likely would reflect the Bucs’ interest in making Kelly the head of football operations, overseeing the entire organization and answering only to ownership, a source said.”

Kelly is coming off his ninth season at the helm of Notre Dame, going 81-35 in that span with a berth to the 2013 BCS National Championship and this season’s College Football Playoff where the Irish fell 30-3 to Clemson on Saturday.

Kelly feels Notre Dame is much closer to contending following Saturday’s 27-point loss than he did following the program’s 42-14 loss to Alabama in the 2013 title game.

“I left that game feeling like there was so much work to be done from the inside out, so much development, so much recruiting. This felt so much different, like we gave up four big plays that we characteristically don't give up. And very capable of moving the football and doing the things necessary to beat this football team,” Kelly said. “They were the better team today. There's no doubt about it. But with now giving them the opportunity to see how they need to play in this atmosphere, not flawless but with excellence, we can come back here and win. So it's a real different feeling for me. I almost have to go like -- I mean, they should play the (Chicago) Bears after playing that game against Alabama. This is a totally different feeling. I feel like this football team is on the brink. Where, when I left that game, it was, "Boy, do we have a lot of work to do.

“We're on the brink. We're close.”

Kelly’s current contract goes through the 2021 season.
