Harrisburg, S.D. - How big of a difference can one business make to a neighborhood?
You've probably heard of the Walmart effect, where businesses build around the large retailer.
There's a similar phenomenon happening in Harrisburg.
Even on a weekday you'll find dozens of jumpers at Air Madness in Harrisburg. On the weekends there are hundreds.
"We get people from all over--Pierre, Watertown, Mitchell," Air Madness General Manager Tyler Pederson said.
The trampoline park opened around a year ago. The 95,000 square foot facility now not only houses trampolines, but also laser tag, baseball training, escape rooms, an after school program and a boutique.
"It was just an opportunity I couldn't pass up on," XTRINSIC Owner Heather Metz said.
Metz opened XTRINSIC, an athleisure boutique, just a few months ago. Nearby you'll also find a new restaurant, coffee shop and another boutique.
"I think it's just going to keep attracting more and more people, not just from Sioux Falls, but surrounding states too," Metz said.
Whether it's at a trampoline park or playing laser tag, surveys find that millennials are more likely to jump on spending money on experiences rather than things.
"It's much needed now. People just need to get out, and they're looking for something to do, and we're trying to be a one-stop shop," Pederson said.
A one-stop-shop that's shooting to put Harrisburg on the map.
Pederson says the building still has room for a few more businesses.
