ST.PAUL, MINN. (KFGO) - The Army Corps of Engineers is starting the winter draw down of reservoirs in the Red River basin. Releasing water water from the reservoirs is done annually, prior to the spring snow melt to create "extra room" to reduce the impact of any potential flooding.
Corps Engineer Mitch Weier says there is more snow water equivalent in the snow pack this year so it is requiring draw downs lower than in recent years.
Weier says the Corps of Engineers started lowering the water from Lake Ashtabula north of Valley City last month to "get a jump" on the spring melt. Water releases within the next week will occur at Lake Traverse near Wheaton, Orwell Lake near Fergus Falls, Lac Qui Parle Reservoir, near Watson, Minnesota, and from the Homme Dam near Park River.
Weier wants the public to be aware of ice conditions on the reservoirs and downstream as the draw downs occur as conditions will change rapidly.
