Mayors challenge 'Drawing the Line' bill that limits city jurisdiction - NBC 15 WPMI

A bill to amend a 43-year-old law extending municipal police and planning jurisdictions beyond city corporate limits could face some challenging opponents.

A group of 14 Baldwin County mayors have signed a resolution in opposition to Sen. Chris Elliot’s bill.

Under Elliott’s proposal, both police and planning jurisdictions would be restricted to existing municipal boundaries. He referred to the plan as “revenue neutral.”

The bill would also repeal a law that allows municipalities to levy business licenses outside its city limits. Supporters of the bill include local businesses that say they cannot afford the license fees and still must pay a city sales tax.

Other mayors seem to support the bill. In Mobile recently, Mayor Sandy Stimpson has been leading and effort to roll back city services offered beyond corporate limits.
