ELK RUN HEIGHTS, Iowa (KWWL) – Today, Elk Run Heights is one step closer to finding out who will be their next mayor.
On Election Day last Tuesday, there was a tie between the two top candidates.
Incumbent Mayor Tim Swope and challenger Kristi Lundy both got 130 votes. Former mayor Gary Wurtz got 73 votes.
The Black Hawk County Auditor’s Office said they’re waiting on one military absentee ballot. If that voter turns in their ballot today, that single ballot could sway the entire mayoral election.
However, if that doesn’t happen Tuesday, there is another process some people might consider “quirky.”
Elk Run Heights is unique because unlike other cities in eastern Iowa, they do not have a run-off election.
Today, the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors is certifying the election results. That means they will get an official tally of votes. If there is still a tie, the Board will determine the mayor by drawing lots. In other words, to break the tie, they would randomly draw a name out of a hat. Whoever loses, may order another recount.
Many people had their eyes on the three-way mayoral race from the very beginning.
>Incumbent Mayor Tim Swope is seeking his third term.
Kristi Lundy served as the city clerk since 2002, before the city fired her this spring.
Gary Wurtz has been mayor before. He stepped down from his position during his 2013 term.
Hot button topics included rebuilding the sewage treatment plant and the city’s decision to fire Lundy.
