A storm out of the Gulf of Alaska has slowed down and is drawing additional moisture from the sub-tropics, which will give the system extra punch when it slams San Diego County late tonight and early Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say that 20 to 30 inches of snow will fall in the upper San Diego County mountains by late Thursday, creating a potentially dangerous winter wonderland. About 1 to 2 inches of rain will fall everywhere else.
“People will need more than chains for their cars if they go see the snow,” said Brandt Maxwell, a weather service forecaster. “They should be packing food extra food and clothing. There could be traffic jams.
“If you really, really have to go, you’d better be prepared.”

Conditions will be even worse in the San Bernardino Mountains, where up to 35 inches of snow could fall in some spots.
Thursday’s daytime high in Julian isn’t expected to rise above 35 degrees. It’ll be 57 in San Diego, which is eight degrees below average.
The county will receive spotty showers until late tonight, when the core of the storm nears Southern California. Then the precipitation will slowly intensify. Maxwell says the heaviest rain will fall from roughly 3 a.m. to noon on Thursday. At times, there will be strong winds, with gusts to 40 mph across some inland foothills and mountains.

A winter storm warning will be in effect from 4 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. on Friday.
Forecasters say 4 to 8 inches of snow could fall below 4,500 feet, and 12 to 18 inches from 4,500 to 5,000 feet. The heaviest snow will fall above that level.
Julian could get hit especially hard by snow. And there will be small amounts on Interstate 8, east of Alpine.
