TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation citizen Faye Askew on Dec. 2 was selected from more than 160 entries as the winner of the Cherokee Phoenix’s free genealogical report.

As part of Native American Heritage Month, those who bought or renewed their $15 annual subscriptions in November were entered in a drawing for a free genealogical report on their Cherokee family by genealogist David Hampton. Along with paid subscriptions, those who took advantage of the Cherokee Phoenix’s Elder/Veterans or At-Large subscriptions funds were also entered to win.

The drawing was held live on the Cherokee Phoenix’s Facebook page.

“I didn’t think I had a chance, I mean at all. I don’t know how many people entered or how many people were eligible or anything like that, so that’s nice,” Askew, of Ponca City, said. “Well, that sounds like fun, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Hampton, who researches the Cherokee genealogies for the cyclists of the Cherokee Nation’s annual “Remember the Removal” Bike Ride, is a CN citizen who has researched Cherokee genealogy for more than 55 years and has a database with more than 120,000 names and information pieces.

The genealogical report is valued at approximately $200.

The Cherokee Phoenix will have other subscription-based giveaways during the next year, including one for a free TV.
