On Monday, December 23, the Fairfield Historical Society held the drawing for the raffle of the “Wagner Cabin” metallic print. The raffle was held to raise funds in support of the Society.
After all the tickets were collected and brought to the Sun Times office, Historical Society Board member Andy Watson went next door to find someone to assist with the drawing. Lindsey Ratliff, who grew up in Fairfield but currently lives in Havre, was in Fairfield visiting family and kindly agreed to lend a hand.
Lidnsey reached into the box of tickets and pulled out a ticket that was purchased by Kerry Bouchard of Augusta.
The Fairfield Historical Society would like to thank the many people who purchased raffle tickets, as well as 2020 calendars and 2020 note cards. The calendars are still on sale at Fairfield Drug and Fairfield Sun Times.
Asked what it was about the photo that caught her attention, Kerry told the Sun Times that it was the sharpness of the photo; the composition of the photo and the historic nature of the photo and the historic items in the photo.
The photo shows evidence of a forest fire in the recent past (based on burned trees in the background). There are mules, a wagon, a dog and rolls of barbed wire in the photo. A horse collar is in the foreground.
Gus Wolfe, Augusta photographer, was on hand when the photo was delivered. Gus suggested the photo might have been taken by Stecker, a photographer that was based in Gilman before he moved his studio to the Allen Ranch, located where Gibson Reservoir is now.
Gus said that the composition and sharp focus was a Stecker trait.
