VNA Hospice volunteers restore dollhouse for holiday drawing

Tickets are $10 and can be bought at VNA Hidden Treasures, 656 21st St., Vero Beach, in the Miracle Mile shopping plaza

The Visiting Nurse Association is holding a holiday drawing for a restored dollhouse to benefit VNA Hospice.

Tickets for the drawing are $10 and can be purchased at VNA Hidden Treasures, 656 21st St., Vero Beach, in the Miracle Mile shopping plaza. The estimated value of the dollhouse is $1,500 and has features such as LED lightbulbs, non-breakable furniture and Christmas-themed décor. The dollhouse will make a wonderful holiday gift and is meant to be enjoyed by children and adults.

The winner of the dollhouse will be drawn on Dec. 18.

The dollhouse was originally featured at the VNA Hospice House children’s room for families and young children. When the playroom was converted into a counseling and bereavement area, VNA volunteer Tom Shoaf and board member Elaine Hameister took the dollhouse to restore it and raise money for end-of-life care in Indian River County.

Shoaf has been restoring and building dollhouses for more than 20 years. As a longtime Piper employee, Shoaf enjoys working with his hands and likes the extreme detailing that goes into dollhouses.

“I like all things miniature,” jokes Shoaf.

Shoaf admits that working on dollhouses is a form of meditation for him and he was happy to be part of project to raise money for a worthy cause.

“I just enjoy giving back. I really enjoy it,” he said.

Hameister also has a history of building dollhouses and became hooked when her father built one for her children years ago. She highlights how dollhouses are timeless and can be passed down through generations.
