Wallraf-Richartz-Museum will present a special show with letters and drawings by Rubens, Dürer, Goethe and Corinth in Cologne. The show is presented in collaboration with Fondation Corboud. The special show is going to transform the Graphic Cabinet section of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum.
The show focuses on the memorabilia of letters in the wake of WhatsApp, Twitter and Instagram. The concept of the show revolves around the nostalgia of letters and the intertwined absence of the urge to write letters. The show talks about how the letter-writing days would involve even occasional decorations of those letters with the author of the letter’s own drawings, authentic and hand-drawn. These artworks or the art of letter writing itself was there to aid one’s own expressions, to underline what they said. These were the traits of the analogue days and in the new found digital era those hardly happen. The show presents a 65,000-page graphic collection of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum. This collection would showcase the delicate relation between the two media, words and illustrations. The numerous drawings and letters presented impressively in the collection would showcase the correlation between them. In this delicate correlation the question often is, when a letter does transform into a drawing and vice versa. This crucial question is what the exhibition at Cologne Museum entitled "The Letter and the Drawing" searches the answer for. The show will bring to the table the personal writings by Peter Paul Rubens and Johann Wolfang Goethe alongside other extraordinary artist’s letters for example Justinus Kerner and Johann de Peters. The show will also feature painted postcards by Emil Orlik and Lovis Corinth.
“The Letter and the Drawing” is on view from February 23 through May 21, 2018 at the Graphic Cabinet of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Obenmarspforten 40, 50667 Köln, Germany.
