Lyndon Station man charged with biting officer, drawing blood

A Lyndon Station man faces criminal charges after law enforcement officials report he bit an officer.

Zachary Sherman, 29, is charged with battery to law enforcement officer, misdemeanor battery, and disorderly conduct. He faces up to six years imprisonment for the first charge.

According to the criminal complaint:

A Juneau County Deputy was notified of a disturbance at a group home in Lyndon Station and dispatched to a 24th Avenue residence.

Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy was informed Sherman had been “verbally aggressive, threatening staff and other residents.” The staff told the deputy this had been happening since earlier in the day, and stated Sherman had swung at a staff member “hitting her on the left jaw causing her pain.”

Around dinner time, Sherman had thrown a glass of lemonade at one of the other residents and “tried to advance at staff again.” He then went to his room and locked the door.

The deputy made contact with Sherman who was “very agitated” and told him he would be going to jail. The staff stated they “did not feel comfortable” having him stay with them at the group home.

Sherman was “not cooperative” with the three deputies escorting him downstairs and outside the group home. While the deputies attempted to take Sherman outside, he began to resist, stating he was not going to jail. Sherman then “pushed his foot at the door pushing him backwards and then tried to get away.”

The deputies eventually restrained Sherman on the ground and handcuffed him. Sherman was also put in leg shackles because he “had been known to kick at the glass” in the squad car from a previous incident. He was then transported to the Juneau County Jail.

At the jail, Sherman was released from handcuffs and leg shackles and placed in a cell. He “immediately started to hit the glass with his hands, numerous times.” Deputies then attempted to put Sherman in a restraint chair. While being placed in the restraint chair, Sherman bit a Mauston police officer in the arm, drawing blood.

Sherman was eventually secured in the restraint chair and placed in a spit mask, “as he was spitting when he was placed back into the cell.”

The Mauston police officer’s arm was photographed and he was medically treated at the Mile Bluff Medical Center.

Sherman is not currently in the Juneau County Jail. His initial appearance at the Juneau County Justice Center is scheduled for March 14.
