The glacial pace of this offseason's free-agent market has drawn the most attention for the names still available at the top. But with Spring Training set to begin, plenty of talented players remain without a club -- including a slugger in Logan Morrison who's coming off a career season.
Morrison, 30, belted a career-high 38 home runs for the Rays in 2017, tying him for fifth among American League hitters. The first baseman also slugged a career-high .516 while also compiling his best OPS (.868) over 149 games. Morrison might not have the acclaim of marquee free-agent sluggers Eric Hosmer, J.D. Martinez and Mike Moustakas, but his power appears to be rounding into peak form.

NBC Sports Boston reported on Friday that the Red Sox had reached out to Morrison's representatives, but his path to Boston has some obstacles. Martinez remains the Red Sox's primary focus as they try to bridge the gap in contract negotiations, and Boston also re-signed another left-handed first baseman in Mitch Moreland earlier this offseason. Still, Morrison is an intriguing alternative should a Martinez deal fall through, and he could split time with Moreland and Hanley Ramirez at the designated hitter spot.
The Royals also remain a possibility for Morrison, who hails from the Kansas City area. Hosmer could still wind up back in powder blue, but ESPN reported on Friday that Morrison could be interested in signing with the Royals if Hosmer does not return. Hosmer has been a face of the Royals' franchise, but Morrison would make for an easy marketing opportunity to local fans should he replace Hosmer at first base.
There may still be an outside chance that Morrison returns to Tampa Bay for a third season, though Morrison's robust 2017 campaign may have priced him out of the Rays' spending range. Morrison was not expected to return last offseason either, however, so there's always a possibility that could happen again if he can't find the deal he's looking for elsewhere. With the current market as hard to predict as any in recent memory, it's hard to rule out anything -- even for a slugger coming off his best Major League season.
