Back to the Drawing Board

Terre Haute, IN - Vigo County School Board members say it's back to the drawing board, this after heated discussions over the issue of bussing students who are 18 years or older to the polls to vote.

No decision has been made final, and time is running out as the Indiana primary election is less than two weeks away.

It was a tough night for Vigo County School Board members. They went back and forth with ideas, criticism, and debates about how they can get local students to the polls.

This discussion has sparked a rollercoaster of support and backlash since last week. The big reason: money.

Some people didn't like the idea because they say the corporation has already cutback on transportation to field trips. Some people say the corporation doesn't have the budget to pay for buses to the polls.

But school board members are standing behind the idea, because they say it's a student's right to have a voice in politics.

"It is important to vote, it's not only a right, I think it's a responsibility of 18 and over to be registered and to vote. I just think it's something they need to do. But you also have to be educated as to what the issues are," said Jackie Lower, President of Vigo County School Board

The decision has been given to the administrative team under superintendent Dr. Danny Tanoos. He says they will do their best to come up with a plan to accommodate transportation for students.

Also board president Jackie Lower says several groups from the community have offered to provide transportation to the polls.
