Manheim $457M Powerball drawing claimed by a trust

MANHEIM, Pa. (WHTM) - The Pennsylvania Lottery announced the Powerball jackpot drawing has been claimed by the Emerald Legacy Trust. The after-tax cash amount for the almost $457 million dollar ticket is nearly $200 million.

The chances of winning the Powerball jackpot are one in 292 million, and that one stopped by Manheim this year. Somebody bought the winning ticket at the Speedway on Lancaster Road, but we don't know who that somebody is.

"We wonder who it is," said Luke Carlino, who lives in Manheim."Who is this?"

"Family members and friends and people they may have come across throughout the years will probably start asking them for money," said Andrew Rusniak, who is an attorney in Lancaster.

Rusniak says a lottery winner may create a trust to remain anonymous.

"The winner will actually assign the ticket to the trust, and then it's the trust that actually submits the claim and receives the proceeds," said Rusniak.

Nearby Speedway is the Manheim Diner, where community members had mixed reviews about the secret winner.

"It's exciting," said Shannon Bauer, who lives in New Holland. "I wish we knew who it was."

"You hear all of these stories in the news that when people come into a lottery winning, that it can have an adverse affect on their life, so I'm hopeful that by being in a trust, they'll get to do lots of positive things with it," said Ciara Young, a Manheim resident.

This was the Powerball's eighth largest jackpot, and the biggest prize Pennsylvania has ever awarded. It goes without saying, but every Manheim resident we spoke with told us they wish they were the lucky one.

"I did not play, and I'm really kicking myself, as I'm sure a lot of people around here are," said Carlino.

The Pennsylvania Lottery's executive director says the organization is now exploring a policy to let winners choose to remain anonymous.
