Johnsburg resident wins $20K at McHenry VFW Queen of Hearts drawing - Northwest Herald

Angela Redman is on her way to paying off debt after winning $20,000 Tuesday.

Redman’s raffle ticket was selected during McHenry Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6400’s Queen of Hearts drawing.

The Johnsburg resident had chosen card No. 8, which revealed the Ace of Hearts, worth $20,000. The Queen is still on the board.

“I’m ecstatic,” she said. “I never thought it would be me.”

Redman has been playing the game for more than a year. She spent about $40 on raffle tickets for Tuesday’s drawing.

“I was just hoping to get money to last through the weekend,” she said. “The only way I am going to spend this money is to pay off my debt.”

She said she will continue to play in hopes of winning the jackpot.

A total of 19 cards remain on the board.

Ticket sales brought in another $165,000 toward next week’s pot, about the same as last week, the organization’s Senior Vice Cmdr. Ben Keefe said.

New this year is sponsorship for the game.

Gary Lang Auto Group, Buss Ford Lincoln, Swederski Concrete Construction, Burris Equipment Company and Jett’s Heating and Air – owned by McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett – are all sponsors, according to the VFW Facebook page.

“It was something we decided to do this year to offset some of our costs,” Keefe said. “It’s a marketing opportunity. We didn’t charge a lot. Just enough to cover the cost of printing the tickets.”

The Queen of Hearts raffles are held Tuesdays. The VFW will be closed on the Fourth of July but will be open for Queen of Hearts ticket sales from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets also are sold from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday before the drawing.

Tickets are $5 apiece and only can be bought with cash.

Under a new city ordinance, the game must finish by July 30. In accordance with this new ordinance, the maximum individual payout for the game will be $3 million, allowing for a maximum jackpot of $6 million.

If a 10 is drawn, the ticketholder will receive $5,000. Jacks will be worth $10,000 to the ticket-holder, kings will be worth $15,000, aces will be worth $20,000, the three queens other than the queen of hearts will be worth $25,000 and the jokers will be worth $30,000.

If the queen of hearts is picked, the ticket-holder will receive 50% of the jackpot, while 40% will go to the VFW and veterans programs, and the remaining 10% will build the next pot.
