ST. PETERS • A St. Charles County seventh grader could have her drawing featured as the Google logo on the website's homepage and win a major prize.
Abbie Chartrand, a student at Fort Zumwalt Dubray Middle School in St. Peters, was chosen this month as the Missouri winner of the 10th annual Doodle 4 Google contest.
Abbie's drawing of an underwater scene was picked from more than 200,000 entries as the Missouri winner.
Her drawing is now one of 53 state and territory winners still in the running for the national grand prize: a $30,000 scholarship, $50,000 in technology for her school and her drawing becoming the Google homepage logo for one day.
The 10th year for the contest asked students "What inspires you?"
"This is a doodle of an amazing underwater adventure that I've dreamed of since I was three," Abbie wrote in her entry to the contest. "This inspires me because I've wanted to go to college to become a marine biologist since I was two, and this is what I imagine my daily adventures would be like."
Voting is open for people to choose their favorite doodles in the contest through 10 p.m. Friday. The contest accepts one vote from each electronic device per day at Doodle4Google.com. Check under "Grades 6-7" for Abbie's entry.
Five finalists will also win $5,000 scholarships and a trip to Google headquarters in California.
According to Dubray Middle School, art teacher Tiffany Scraper has students participate in the Google Doodle contest each year, but Abbie took the extra step to officially submit her drawing.
Google representatives came to the school May 3 to announce the middle-schooler as the Missouri winner. The announcement was made in front of the entire seventh grade class.
Abbie told the crowd she hopes to become a marine biologist or a shark biologist one day.
The entry from Illinois was submitted by an elementary student from the Chicago area.
