Oklahoma State recruiting: Cowboys back to drawing board with QB search

Oklahoma State became San Clemente (Calif.) quarterback Brendan Costello’s first major offer after the 2019 prospect impressed at a camp in Stillwater, Okla.

Costello could become the Cowboys’ focus at quarterback for this cycle, and the 6-foot-1, 185-pound standout seems to be a fan of Oklahoma State.

“It’s a great feeling, I’m really exited about the offer,” Costello told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins. “They came out to see me work out a week or so ago and I did pretty well.

“Coach [Mike] Yurcich invited me to come out and camp with them and said if I threw the same way I did when he was on campus, they would offer. So I was really motivated to have a good workout and it’s awesome how it all worked out.”

Costello is a 3-star prospect, according to 247Sports, and the No. 18-ranked dual-threat quarterback in 2019. He’s a name to watch out for in the coming months.

5-star S Daxton Hill, Tulsa (Okla.) Booker T. Washington

Daxton Hill, the younger brother of Oklahoma State running back Justice Hill, is one of the best players in the 2019 class. He’s listed Oklahoma State as one of his top 6 choices. The Cowboys, however, will have a tough time landing the elite safety, who is ranked the No. 27 overall prospect by 247Sports. Having Justice Hill on its roster, as well as the commitment of Daxton Hill’s high school teammate, Demarco Jones, should help Oklahoma State.

4-star DE Marcus Hicks, Wichita (Kan.) Northwest

Marcus Hicks is one of the best prospects in Kansas — if not the best. He has a huge frame (6-5, 236 pounds), and would provide the Cowboys a boost along their defensive line. The athletic lineman originally listed Oklahoma State in his top 12, a list which also includes Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas from the Big 12. SB Nation’s Bud Elliott added the Cowboys are high on Hicks’ list.

3-star DE Taurean Carter, Mansfield Legacy (Mansfield, Texas)

The Cowboys seem to be stockpiling defensive linemen this cycle, so why not target Taurean Carter? He is listed at 6-3, 260 pounds. He’s one of the top defensive end prospects and Texas products in the 2019 class, and Oklahoma State should be a big player for Carter if he isn’t scared of competition. His other major offers include Texas Tech, Florida, Indiana and Michigan State.

3-star DT Enoch Jackson, Mansfield Legacy (Mansfield, Texas)

Could Carter and Jackson both team up in Stillwater, Okla.? It’s certainly possible. Jackson listed Oklahoma State as one of his top 6 choices. The Cowboys face an uphill battle with Jackson’s apparent interest in the SEC’s Arkansas, Georgia and Ole Miss. But the Cowboys are doing a great job so far with landing 2019 defensive linemen.

Oklahoma State has had some tough luck with 2019 quarterbacks. Brendan Costello could be the answer, however. He’s a prospect the coaches seem to like. He adds a dual-threat element, which seems to be a trend with recent Oklahoma State quarterback recruits. Costello could also open a few doors for the Cowboys out West.
