The Mega Millions jackpot for Friday’s drawing is $548 million — the third-largest jackpot hit in the history of the game, according to a press release from the Massachusetts State Lottery.
The jackpot is the Mega Millions’s largest since Dec. 17, 2013, when it reached $648 million. That prize was split between two winners in California and Georgia, officials said.
“As this jackpot approaches record-setting levels and the excitement surrounding it builds, we remind people to keep the experience of playing the lottery enjoyable by playing responsibly,” Michael Sweeney, executive director of the Massachusetts State Lottery, said in the press release.
Friday’s drawing will happen at 11 p.m., and it will be the 23rd drawing since the jackpot was last hit on July 24.
That $543 million prize was split among 11 co-workers in California, officials said.
The largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won was $656 million, which was split among three winners in Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland on March 30, 2012, officials said.
Each Mega Millions ticket is $2, and can be played in 44 states, as well as Washington, D.C., and the US Virgin Islands. The deadline to buy a ticket eligible for Friday’s drawing is 10:45 p.m. Friday, officials said.
The results of the drawing will be available at masslottery.com and on the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages, officials said.
