LOWVILLE — There was no winner again on Sunday in the Queen of Hearts drawing at the American Legion, allowing the jackpot to grow even bigger.
Lee Hinkleman, American Legion Commander, predicted that the jackpot would be up to more than $30,000 by Jan. 6, and he wasn’t wrong. At the time of the drawing, the jackpot had already almost hit $30,100.
“That $30,000 mark is huge,” said Mr. Hinkleman, “I think we’ll be up to at least $35,000 by Sunday, but it may be more like $40,000. It’s really hard to say at this point.”
If the last crowd was any indication, Mr. Hinkleman’s estimate may be conservative. The Legion was packed, with the double doors wide open and people coming in two or three across.
As public interest and the jackpot grows, so do the Legion’s ranks. Mr. Hinkleman said it has been a great recruiting tool: four new legionnaires and a number of new auxiliary members have joined as a result of the contest’s allure.
Revenue created by the merry-makers lining the bar waiting for their names to be drawn is a big bonus for the organization, allowing for more money for the group to donate to community organizations.
“We already have a check for $1,000 written for the food pantry, and that could grow,” Mr. Hinkleman said, “That’s why we’re so excited. It’s not just the Legion that gains, the community gains. That’s what we do.”
The game began in March with a deck of 54 cards, jokers included, mounted to a board that was hung on a wall.
Each week, a ticket is drawn from the hopper full of names collected just that week. If present, the person whose name is drawn gets to pick one of the remaining cards in search of the Queen of Hearts.
If the name of someone who is not present is drawn, the next available card on the board will be chosen on their behalf.
There are now 11 cards left to choose from; the odds get better as the jackpot gets bigger.
The winner will take home 60 percent of the total pot, while the military museum will get the remaining 40 percent for the upkeep and restoration of the building, including new LED lights.
To better accommodate the anticipated crowd on Sunday, chicken barbecue dinners will be available, for takeout only, from noon until they are gone. Dinners will include half of a chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad, a roll and dessert for $10. Chicken alone will cost $6.
The Queen of Hearts Drawing will be at 5 p.m.
The public is invited to enter the Queen of Hearts drawing, no membership required. The Legion, at 5383 Dayan St., is open at noon every day and entering the drawing is $1 a ticket.
