Hours before he gave a State of the Union address that emphasized unity, President Donald Trump reportedly took a swipe at John McCain, drawing a rebuke from the late Arizona senator’s daughter.
According to the New York Times, Trump ripped into several targets, most of them Democrats, during private lunch for television anchors Tuesday afternoon, but he also took aim at McCain.
A veterans’ advocacy group brought the story to Meghan McCain’s attention on Twitter, and she responded by saying Trump had an “obsession” with her father and called it “pathetic.”
The co-host of “The View” got the last word, telling the president that “the greatness of my father’s life and legacy haunts you.”
The story said Trump brought up the Arizona Republican icon’s no vote that sunk legislation aiming to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare:
He recounted again the story of what he considered Senator John McCain’s betrayal in voting against advancing a measure to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care program. Although Mr. McCain has since died, Mr. Trump remains upset.
“By the way,” Trump reportedly added, “he wrote a book and the book bombed.”
McCain’s memoir, which was released in May 2018, three months before his death, actually debuted at No. 1 on the Times’ best-seller list.
Sales of the book, “The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations,” also surged after McCain died on Aug. 25.
Trump and McCain had multiple public disagreements while the longtime senator battled a rare form of brain cancer over the last year of his life.
After McCain’s death, the president was asked to stay away from the memorial events.
Arizona’s Morning News will react to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address starting at 5 a.m. Wednesday.
