There are many ways to draw the eye of potential clients. One such way is through website design. Not only does your website contain information about your brand, but at first glance, it can tell an audience a lot about your company. Is your company straight to the point with no frills? Is your company’s process streamlined and easy to navigate? Is your brand's aesthetic appealing?
These are all questions that can be answered by website design. To help you decide what aspects of website design to focus on, we asked seven members of Forbes Communications Council to share their thoughts on what works. Here's what they advise:
1. Align With Needs
Appropriate and compelling website design is critical to creating a valuable experience for clients and customers. The design must be user friendly and rich with content that aligns with the customer's needs and values. The navigation and content should be able to transport the customer through the site, sustain their interest, and ultimately compel the prospect to buy through an intuitive eCommerce experience. - Barry Trexler, DenMat Holdings, LLC
2. Manage Your Menu
It’s critical to design a beautiful menu with intuitive functionality, but be sure to choose the content of your menu wisely. Don't overlook your website's menu as a communication tool. In every responsive form, your menu can tell a lot about your brand and your business. Think of your menu like an outline. It needs to flow naturally and tell the audience what you do in a direct and succinct way. If the only thing users read was your menu, would they know your purpose? - Mandy Glidewell, CentricsIT
3. Focus On Values
As business-to-business continues to be commoditized in the marketplace, changes in a company’s brand and value propositions are needed. Focusing on the individual and inspirational value can set a B2B company apart. These changes should be reflected in the company’s website. Further, the website should demonstrate that you know and understand your customers’ challenges first and foremost, and these are delineated on the site. The updated value propositions and brand propositions should be used consistently and indicate how they improve the customer experience. - Kay Kienast, True Influence
4. Choose The Right Content
Presenting the right information with a clean UX to each web user is crucial. The "right" content and quantity depends on the purpose of the website. For our B2B site, we aim to capture prospective customers' attention with just enough information to warm their interest into a lead, which our sales team can then follow up on. Including every detail has proven to overwhelm and push away prospects. - Katherine French, Derive Systems
5. Be Mobile Friendly
Adapting your website design for mobile usage is a requirement in 2019. If a site isn't mobile friendly, I'll immediately leave. Users shouldn't be forced to expand the screen to fit their liking. This includes a robust menu design that allows for ease of mobile use. - Brittany White, Apple Growth Partners
6. Have Clear Headlines And Calls To Action
Two very important design elements you need to take into consideration for drawing in clients or customers is to make sure your headlines are clean, clear and concise and have strong call to actions at the right places. For example, explore your website's analytics and take a look where your audience is most engaged on your website. That page is now one of your most important selling pieces on your site. The next question you want to ask yourself is, "How do I optimize this page to drive more conversions?" The best way to do that is to have strong headlines and relevant call to actions that can allow you to convert high-quality traffic. - Hasnain Raza, Market One Media Group

7. Create Quality Content
The quality of content is the most critical part of any website "design." It may sound old-fashioned, but no amount of SEO, properly applied Google AdSense efforts, or beautiful layout and graphics can propel an organization that ultimately doesn't have something worthwhile to say. Those techniques are all critical for driving traffic to the site, granted, but you must first ensure the content is worth driving potential prospects to that spot. You need content that will sustain the traffic and leave them glad that you used search terms and techniques that brought them to your page, making them want to come back again and again. - Adam Giffi, Alexander Mann Solutions
