“It is great that Appalachian recognizes all of those who are committed to their duties and even go above and beyond.”

Eric Gormly, program director of student veteran services, on receiving a Staff Shout Out.

BOONE, N.C. — The Staff Shout Out program at Appalachian State University announces Eric Gormly, program director of student veteran services, as the winner of its December 2018/January drawing.

Melissa Daniel, student services specialist in Appalachian’s Office of the Registrar, gave Gormly a Shout Out in December “because he truly went above and beyond during the busy (December 2018) commencement days,” she said.

“I assist volunteers during commencement and am not always nearby to answer questions. Eric used his best judgement to help out in a situation when I could not be present,” she explained.

Of his time volunteering in the December commencement ceremonies, Gormly said, “I love the bittersweet moment of seeing students walk across the stage at commencement. While the students we have had the privilege of getting to know and help are leaving, as employees of the university, we understand that academic success and graduation are two of the primary goals.”

“The Staff Shout Out program is an excellent way to thank our colleagues for the things they do without being asked. Everyone deserves positive recognition,” Daniel added.

The Staff Shout Out program, an informal recognition initiative created by Staff Senate’s Staff Recognition Committee, aims to highlight Appalachian staff members for their positive contributions to the university. The committee works to improve employee engagement and encourage an environment of support and appreciation.

Examples of actions for which Appalachian staff members have received Shout Outs:

  • Going above and beyond to help a fellow co-worker or student.
  • Picking up trash on campus grounds just because.
  • Encouraging recycling among officemates.
  • Having an infectious positive attitude.
  • Taking initiative.
  • Helping a co-worker complete a task voluntarily.
  • Random acts of kindness.

Recipients of a Shout Out are notified the month following their nomination and receive a card detailing why they were nominated, which is handwritten and personally delivered by a member of Staff Senate. Each recipient is also entered into a monthly drawing for a gift from the University Bookstore.

As part of winning the drawing, Gormly will receive a gift from the University Bookstore valued at $25.

“It is great that Appalachian recognizes all of those who are committed to their duties and even go above and beyond,” Gormly said of receiving a Shout Out.

To date, Appalachian staff members have received 1,019 Shout Outs.
