A formal investigation has been opened at Silver Creek High School, say school officials in Kensington.
Authorities are trying to identify who is responsible for drawing a swastika. The pencil drawing was found on Wednesday on the wall of the boys bathroom. Initially, it was cleaned by the staff but school officials say it’s still unclear who drew the anti-Semitic symbol. “This behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Silver Creek High School,” claimed director Traci Townsend in a letter sent to families of students who attend the school.
The incident was reported to the Montgomery Police Department and is under investigation. Silver Creek High School opened its doors at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year, and last year reported no incidents of hatred or racism. The Montgomery County school system has more than 200 public schools, and according to reports, 56 cases of hate bias were reported throughout the District, ten were reported to the police.
On Monday, Superintendent Jack Smith announced on a YouTube a video entitled “Diversity enriches us all”, in which he condemned the acts of hatred and racism. “Students and staff who engage in racist acts and target others for their skin color, gender, religion, sexual identity or culture will face serious consequences,” Smith said.
