With Melbourne Victory floundering near the bottom of the A-League table, Leigh Broxham says Friday night's clash with Perth Glory shapes as a "line in the sand game" for the struggling traditional powerhouse.
Victory are second-last, have just five points from a potential 21 across their opening seven games and were stung by a 3-1 loss to Adelaide last weekend.
"I think we came in and we addressed it as a playing group the first day we were back and then with the coach as well," Broxham said of their latest defeat.
"Obviously it's not good enough from our point of view.
"We want to be winning games every week and it was a bit of a line in the sand, saying we've got to start picking up points or the season's going to get too far away from us."
With a season-defining slate of games against Perth, Western United, Wellington and Melbourne City to come, Broxham emphasised the importance of accountability among the players in turning things around.
"Every player's probably been in a similar situation in their career - or experienced players have - so it's just looking at yourself and what you can do better," he said.
After the loss to Adelaide, coach Marco Kurz said his side needed to get back to basics - a sentiment reflected in the Victory playing group.
"We're not shying away, we're not blaming him, we're saying as a playing group we've got to do things better, basics, fighting for balls and being in duels - little things like that," Broxham said.
"We were right in the game (against Adelaide), as poorly as it went we were still right in the game on the weekend and we're obviously on the same page."
Broxham said the players and Kurz - in his first season at Victory after two years at Adelaide - had an "honest" two-way conversation about their poor start.
"We spoke to him and said 'we can do this better, let's maybe work on these things better and I think you'll get a better response from players doing things a different way,'" he said.
