The special connection between drawing and sculpture is the focus of a new exhibition at Moncrieff-Bray Gallery in Sussex that combines the works of the renowned sculptors Jilly Sutton and Helen Denerly, highlighting the importance of draughtsmanship to their creative process.
Sutton’s wood carvings, relief prints and paintings on wood will be shown alongside Denerly’s charcoal drawings, monoprints and 3-D creatures created using recycled materials.
Observation and drawing are integral to both Sutton and Denerly’s artistic practices. Sutton creates large, experimental charcoal drawings, typically on the floor, before beginning work on a sculpture; for Denerly, whose series of monoprints allude to the wild bulls of ancient cave paintings, sculpture is a form of three-dimensional drawing.
‘Jilly Sutton and Helen Denerley: Sculpture & Drawing’ is at the Moncrieff –Bray Gallery in Sussex from 27 April to 26 May 2019.
